Today's Refresher Thursday post is about clavicle fractures. With the release of OEC 6 came changes in how we treat certain injuries. Figure 8 splints are no longer recommended for clavicle fractures. Using the alternative sling and swathe method, follow these steps: 1. Support patient’s elbow while it is bent to just under a 90-degree angle. 2. Lay the long corner of the triangle bandage across patient’s chest and over the uninjured shoulder in the midclavicular line. 3. Bring the other corner of the sling up and around the forearm and under the near axilla (i.e. armpit of the injured side. 4. Tie this corner to the opposite upper corner behind patient’s back to keep pressure off the injured clavicle. 5. Tie the swathe around patient’s chest and forearm rather than around the injured part of the upper arm. With OEC refreshers on the horizon, we will be posting weekly updates with OEC reminders as well as tips/tricks!
Today's Refresher Thursday post is about anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a severe reaction and illness to an allergen. Reactions may include signs/symptoms such as rash, difficulty breathing, neausea, vomiting, and anxiety. One of the most important things to do in these scenarios is to remove the allergen. Intramuscular epinephrine should be used to treat patients exhibiting anaphylaxis. Administer epinephrine and monitor patients for 10 minutes. If condition does not improve, an additional dose of epinephrine may be administered. A helpful line to remember when using an EpiPen is ""Blue to the sky, orange to the thigh,"" referring to the two colored ends on the EpiPen.
